'Roo Men Hold Off Southwestern for 2-1 Win

SHERMAN, Texas – With the regular season winding down, the Austin College men's soccer team earned a big Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory, topping Southwestern University 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The 'Roos are now 8-5-1 overall and 5-4 in conference play.

The 'Roos came out looking strong from the start, getting on the scoreboard in the 26th minute of action to go on top 1-0 when Levin Dyson played a ball from the end line into the middle of the box, where Thomas Quick blasted it home from eight yards out. That would remain the score as the two teams headed into the break

In the second half, Austin College struck again early on as Quick found Jack Wheaton, who ripped a shot from 18 yards out on the left wing and into the back of the net in the 49th minute. The score remained 2-0 until late in the match, when a scramble in front of the net led to a Southwestern tally in the 69th minute. Joseph Khalaf saved a penalty kick, but in the ensuing battle for the rebound, Southwestern's Martin Vila punched it home from just in front of the goal mouth to make it 2-1.

However, Austin College would use strong defense down the stretch to hold off a Pirate comeback attempt. Southwestern held a 21-12 advantage on shots, but Khalaf made four saves as Austin College grabbed the victory.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
