Ramirez's Golden Goal Lifts 'Roos Past TLU

SHERMAN, Texas – Juan Ramirez scored in the 106th minute to break a scoreless tie and give the Austin College men's soccer team a 1-0 double overtime win over Texas Lutheran on Friday afternoon. The 'Roos are now 7-5-1 overall and 4-4 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

It was a back and forth affair from the start between the 'Roos and the Bulldogs, with each side getting several strong chances but being turned away each time as the game quickly turned into a defensive struggle. Texas Lutheran appeared to be on the cusp of breaking the stalemate with under three minutes left in regulation, but Joseph Khalaf made a spectacular save, diving backward to corral a header and keep things scoreless.

The 'Roos had an opportunity with less than a minute remaining on a free kick just outside the box, but Jack Wheaton's shot was turned away by TLU's Brendan Soto with just 24 seconds remaining. After a scoreless first overtime period, Austin College turned up the pressure offensively, and with just 4:20 left to play, Ramirez ripped a shot from 20 yards out, curling it just under the crossbar to give Austin College the victory.

Khalaf finished with six saves to earn his fourth clean sheet of the season, as TLU out-shot Austin College 18-12 in the match.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
