Big Second Half Propels Schreiner Past 'Roos

SHERMAN, Texas – Austin College trailed just 1-0 at halftime, but a four goal second half outburst by Schreiner University propelled the Mountaineers past the 'Roo men's soccer team 5-0 on Friday afternoon. The 'Roos fall to 4-11-1 overall and 2-8 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Schreiner got on the board early when Gregg Gutierrez chipped a ball over Austin College keeper Michael Moran on a one-timer from Robert Hensley in the 12th minute of action, and that would be the lone tally of the first half as the teams went into the break with the score 1-0.

However, Zach Garcia netted the second goal for Schreiner at the 52:32 mark to make it 2-0, and in the 74th minute of action Orlando Sanchez scored on a header off of a throw-in to make it 3-0. The Mountaineers tallied twice more in a span of under five minutes, first in the 82nd minute and again in the 86th minute to make it a 5-0 final.

Schreiner, who the 'Roos had previously beaten 2-0 on September 25, owned a 17-11 shot advantage in the match, and Moran finished with six saves as Austin College's three keepers combined for eight saves in the match. The 'Roos will be back in action on Sunday when they host No. 15-ranked Trinity University.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
