The Austin College men's soccer team came back from a one goal halftime deficit to force overtime and ended up battling Howard Payne University to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Tuesday afternoon. The 'Roos are now 0-1-1 on the year.
Neither team was able to capitalize through most of the first half, but just when it seemed the two sides would take a scoreless game into the half, Kevin Diaz sent a diving header into the net off a corner kick from Patrick Barker with just two seconds left before the break to give Howard Payne a 1-0 lead.
The lead would not last long however, as Caleb Sherer found the back of the net off of a rebound from an Andrew Parides shot in the 52nd minute to square things at 1-1. That would remain the score as both teams had scoring chances, but both defenses came up big and sent things into overtime. Howard Payne looked to have a prime scoring chance in the second overtime, but Austin College defender Mason Waddell knocked away what would have been a certain tally just before it crossed the goal line to maintain the tie, and that's how things would end.
Andrew Celio had a big game in the net for Austin College, making 11 saves, while Lance Forehand made two saves and Allan Chehadi made one splitting time for HPU.
The 'Roos are back in action on Friday when they take on LeTourneau University at 5:30 p.m.
Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
