'Roos Fall to Schreiner in Overtime

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Austin College men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought overtime battle at Schreiner on Friday night, falling to the Mountaineers 99-93. The 'Roos are now 3-14 overall and 1-5 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Kam Hogan scored 21 points and Justice Mercadel added 20, but the 'Roos were out-scored 39-to-9 from the free throw line and the Mountaineers held a 60-to-38 rebounding edge in the contest, while four starters fouled out for Austin College. Schreiner's Keenan Gumbs made a SCAC-record 26 free throws on his way to 46 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Mountaineers.

The 'Roos fell behind in the opening minutes but a three from Mercadel gave them their first lead at 13-11 with 12:56 left in the opening half, before seven straight points for Schreiner put the 'Roos in a five-point hole. Austin College used an 11-2 run capped off by a triple from Hogan to take a 24-20 lead, and the 'Roos would head into the locker room holding a 38-33 advantage.

Kameron Hill's three pushed it to a 41-35 lead early in the second half, but Schreiner battled back with a 13-4 run that put them on top 48-45 with 15:09 left in regulation. The deficit grew to 58-49 with under 13 minutes to play, but Austin College responded with a 9-0 run to square things once again. Schreiner got the lead back out to seven at 72-65, but once again Austin College fought back, and Hill's three pointer with seven seconds remaining tied things up at 78 apiece and sent the game into overtime.

However, Gumbs scored 12 of his 46 points in overtime, including a pair of three-point-plays in the early going, and Austin College was unable to keep the pace.

Austin College forced Schreiner into 25 turnovers in the game, and held the Mountaineers without a made three pointer. Hogan added seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals to his team-best scoring output, and Mercadel had six boards, six steals, and four assists. Hill knocked down 4-of-9 threes on his way to 17 points, and JP Feider went 7-of-7 from the field to score 15 points. Michael Holland fell just short of a double-double with eight points and 11 boards.

Gumbs was 26-of-27 from the free throw line to get his 46 points, and Blake Kelley scored 22 of his 28 points in the second half and overtime, adding 13 boards for Schreiner. Paul Wells also posted a double-double for Schreiner with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
