Men's Hoops Opens Season with Victory

The Austin College men's basketball team edged LeTourneau 72-69 in the season opener in Longview behind 19 points from Cedric Hudson.

The 'Roos trailed 17-12 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the opening half, but stormed back to claim a 25-21 lead with 8:19 left to play before halftime. LeTourneau took a 29-27 lead on a three pointer with 6:10 on the clock, but an 8-0 run by the 'Roos, capped off by a jumper from Stephen Igbinosa, made it a 35-29 game with 2:08 left before the break and Austin College would take a 37-31 lead into halftime.

The lead grew to double figures on a three-point-play by Hudson early in the second half, making it 42-31, but LeTourneau would fight back to square things up at 48 apiece with 10:51 remaining. A Justin Wade jumper gave Austin College a 53-50 lead, but LeTourneau would score the next four to put go ahead by one. The two teams traded baskets and the lead several times over the next few minutes, with a Hudson basket putting Austin College on top 60-59 with 6:24 on the clock.

Austin College would not trail the rest of the game, stretching the lead to as much as five and getting free throws from Wade, Hudson, and Austin Freet in the final moments to secure the victory.

Hudson knocked down 7-of-14 shots to get his 19 points, and Brian Baehl added 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Wade came off the bench to chip in 11 points in just 16 minutes of action.
