'Roos Fall Short at Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. - The Austin College football team found itself in a big hole early and was unable to climb out, falling 36-24 on the road at Hendrix College on Saturday afternoon. The 'Roos are now 2-2 overall and 0-2 in Southern Athletic Association play.

Hendrix struck quickly with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Miles Thompson just over two minutes into the game, but Austin College answered back later in the first quarter. The 'Roos put together a nine play, 78-yard drive capped off by a five yard touchdown run from Brandon Evans to square things up with 6:50 on the clock. However, the momentum swung back to the Warriors on the ensuing drive, as Thompson connected with Ben Luedtke for a 57-yard touchdown, and Thompson would add his third scoring strike of the opening quarter with 58 seconds remaining to make it 19-7 after one.

A 36-yard field goal by Cesar Ruiz cut it to a 19-10 game early in the second quarter, but Hendrix responded with a field goal of its own, and Thompson would add a rushing touchdown and one more score through the air before halftime to send the Warriors into the break leading Austin College 36-10. Austin College tried to mount a comeback in the second half, holding the Warriors scoreless in the final two quarters and getting two more touchdowns from Evans - including a 34-yarder with 13:30 left in the fourth - but it would not be enough as the 'Roos fell 36-24.

Gunter native Trey Carr made the first start of his collegiate career at quarterback, completing 6-of-12 passes for 35 yards while rushing for a game-high 146 yards on 21 carries, including a 62-yard jaunt. Evans finished with 82 yards on 10 carries with three touchdowns, and Blake Hollenbeck led the 'Roo receivers with 38 yards on two catches. Jackson Townsend made 13 stops to pace the Austin College defense.

Austin College returns to Jerry Apple Stadium next Saturday, when they play host to Berry College in another SAA matchup.
