'Roo Football Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Open Season

The Austin College football team forced overtime in the final minute but fell 24-21 on a Rhodes field goal in the team's season opener on Saturday afternoon.

Austin College jumped out to an early lead on an 11 yard touchdown run from Bryce Murphy, who would have a huge day running the ball with 163 yards on 22 carries. After Rhodes scored 14 unanswered to end the first quarter and send the Lynx into halftime leading Austin College 14-7, the 'Roos found themselves facing a fourth and one from the 30 early in the third quarter, and Murphy broke through the line for his second touchdown of the game.

Rhodes answered with a touchdown of its own in the third to head into the final quarter holding a 21-14 lead, but Austin College once again leaned on Murphy and he answered with a three yard touchdown with just 41 seconds remaining to force overtime.

However, despite getting the ball first in overtime the 'Roos were unable to find paydirt, and Rhodes kicked a 24 yard field goal to hand Austin College the loss.

Along with Murphy's big day on the ground, Noah Jesko completed 27-of-44 passes for 259 yards and two picks and Madison Ross caught a team-best seven passes for 71 yards. Cooper Woodyard added five receptions for 72 yards, and Tre Stewart and Brett Vaughn each had 10 tackles to lead the 'Roo defense.

Austin College will be looking to rebound next weekend when they host East Texas Baptist at Apple Stadium in the home opener with kickoff set for 2:00 p.m.
