'Roo Baseball Splits Double-Dip with Centenary

SHERMAN, Texas - After being rained out in Shreveport on Sunday, the Austin College baseball team hosted Centenary College in a makeup doubleheader on Monday evening at Baker Field with the Gents taking game one 12-1 before Austin College bounced back to collect the team's first win of the year, coming away with a 9-3 victory. The 'Roos are now 1-8 overall and 1-5 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

After a scoreless inning to open game one, Centenary got on the board with a run in the second and added two more in the third, as an error opened the door for a pair of runs in the frame to make it 3-0. The Gents tacked on another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, with Alex Miller doubling home a run and Miles Keith adding an RBI to push it to a 6-0 game. The 'Roos got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh as Desmond Squalls singled home Ashton Cason to make it 6-1, but the Gents pushed three runs across in the eighth and added another three in the ninth to make it 12-1, and that's how things would finish.

Trystan Mallory took the loss for Austin College, surrendering six runs - three earned - on five hits with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work, while Tyler Hughes picked up the win for the Gents, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and five hits allowed. Isaac Villa, Tino Ramirez, and Cason each had a pair of hits for the 'Roos.

The 'Roos took an early lead in game two, as Jayden Ayala-Hinojosa singled to center to plate Villa, and after Centenary evened things up in the top of the second, Austin College erupted for five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Cason got things started with an RBI single, and Easton Clark followed by scoring on a wild pitch. Ramirez plated another run, and RayShawn Riley drove in a pair of runs to cap off the big inning.

The Gents got two runs back in the top of the fifth to cut it to a 6-3 game, but an error allowed Cason to score in the fifth and Villa came home soon after on a ground ball by Ayala-Hinojosa. Scott Hosmer got the final run across for Austin College in the bottom of the eighth, bringing home Villa with a sacrifice fly to make it a 9-3 final.

Blake Goodridge got the win for the 'Roos, giving up three runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits with nine strikeouts in 8.0 innings of work, and Villa went 3-for-4 with four runs and two stolen bases to lead the 'Roos offensively. Noah Paulson had two hits for the Gents, and Carson Dingler took the loss after giving up six runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of action.
