'Roo Baseball Swept at St. Thomas

HOUSTON, Texas - The Austin College baseball team dropped its three games at the University of St. Thomas over the weekend, falling 8-6 in game one before dropping 14-9 and 21-11 decisions in Saturday's doubleheader. The 'Roos are now 5-15 overall and 1-5 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The 'Roos jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the series opener, but the Celts tied things up in the bottom of the first before taking a 4-2 lead after three innings. Austin College squared things up in the top of the fourth, but in the bottom half of the inning St. Thomas went on top for good with a run to make it 5-4, and the margin grew to 8-4 before a pair of late runs for Austin College to make it an 8-6 final.

Justin Lambright took the loss in relief, surrendering four runs on five hits in 4.0 innings of work. Zack Mahoney and Brandon Hill each had a pair of hits for the 'Roos, and Mason Woodhouse drove in a pair of runs.

The 'Roos once again took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game two, but after St. Thomas tied things up in the bottom half of the inning the Celts plated five runs in the second and five more in the third to make it a 12-2 game. The teams traded runs in the fourth to make it 13-3 before the 'Roos got three runs back in the sixth to make it 13-6. The margin narrowed to 13-7 in the seventh, but the Celts made it 14-7 in the bottom half of the inning. Austin College plated a pair of runs in the ninth to make it a 14-9 final.

Mahoney went 2-for-6 with three RBI to pace Austin College offensively, and Jake Webster went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Scott Hosmer added a 3-for-5 performance, while Garrett Gray took the loss after giving up seven runs on six hits in 1.1 innings pitched.

St. Thomas pushed five runs across in the first inning and another in the second in the final game of the weekend and led the rest of the way, despite Austin College scoring five runs in the third to cut it to a 6-5 game. The Celts answered with six runs in the bottom half of the third to make it 12-5, and the margin grew to 15-5 in the fourth. Austin College scored a pair of runs in the seventh, and after UST plated one in the bottom of the inning the 'Roos scored four in the eighth to cut it to a 16-11 game. However, St. Thomas answered with five runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 21-11 final.

Max Danielsen absorbed the loss, giving up six runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work, while Webster went 3-for-5 to lead Austin College at the dish.
