'Roo Baseball Falls to Ecclesia

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team surrendered just eight hits, but Ecclesia College drew 12 walks and two more batters were hit by pitches as the Royals topped the 'Roos 15-5 on Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup. The 'Roos are now 6-6 overall this season with the loss.

Austin College jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, with Brett Taff and James Arguello each driving in a run. The lead grew to 1-0 in the second on a sacrifice fly by Bennett Reagan, but in the top of the third the Royals plated five runs to take the lead for the first time in the game.

Ecclesia plated three more runs in the fourth, including two coming home on bases-loaded walks, to make it an 8-3 game. Ecclesia's Jeremy Green then added a two-run double in the fifth to push it to a 10-3 margin. Austin College would get those two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, with Cody Goggins and Justin Alphonse each driving in a run, but in the top of the seventh Green cleared the bases with a triple as part of a four-run inning to make it a 14-5 game.

Ecclesia would tack on one more run in the eighth to make it a 15-5 final. Trevor Anderson took the loss for Austin College, giving up five runs (three earned) on three hits in 3.0 innings pitched. Oscar Gonzalez, Josh Boring, and Alphonse each had two hits for Austin College. Green paced Ecclesia at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance and six RBI.

Austin College opens up Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend as they play host to No. 2-ranked Trinity University on Saturday and Sunday for a three game series.
