ALPINE, Texas - The Austin College baseball team dropped the opening game of its three game series at Sul Ross State on Friday night, falling 8-3 to the Lobos. The 'Roos are now 1-1 overall this season.

Sul Ross jumped on top 2-0 after the first inning, but an error in the second opened the door for the 'Roos to come back and square things up. James Arguello scored after stealing third, with an errant throw on the play enabling him to cross home. Justin Alphonse later added an RBI single to make it 2-2.

That remained the score until the bottom of the fifth, when the Lobos plated two more before Austin College answered back with an RBI double by Oscar Gonzalez to cut it to a 4-3 game in the seventh. That's as close as things would get the rest of the way, though, as Sul Ross got a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh and added three more runs in the eighth to make it an 8-3 final.

Christian Thomas took the loss for Austin College, surrendering four runs (two earned) on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. Gonzalez finished the game going 3-for-4 at the dish, and Alphonse and Bennett Reagan each had a pair of hits.

The 'Roos and Lobos will wrap up their weekend series with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday.
