'Roo Baseball Opens 2018 With Victory

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team got off to a strong start in 2018, topping Dallas Christian 6-4 on Thursday evening at Baker Field in the first game of the season for the 'Roos.

Austin College got on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead on a double from James Arguello in the top of the first inning. The 'Roos went ahead 3-0 in the third as Brett Taff doubled to center, scoring Oscar Gonzalez. The lead would grow to 4-0 in the fifth when Arguello singled up the middle with Gonzalez once again coming around to score.

However, Dallas Christian rallied back with four runs in the top of the sixth to square things up but a sacrifice fly from Justin Alphonse put Austin College back on top in the seventh. James Wyche addd an RBI single in the inning to put the 'Roos on top 6-4, and the Austin College bullpen shut the door on DCC over the final two innings.

Chase Almaguer picked up the win in relief, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout, while Collin Maynard earned the save after throwing a scoreless ninth. Arguello finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Taff went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
