'Roo Baseball Completes Series Sweep of Schreiner

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team celebrated Senior Day with a pair of wins over Schreiner University to complete a series sweep over the Mountaineers, winning game one 9-1 before coming from behind for an 8-7 walk-off win in game two. The 'Roos are now 12-22 overall and 6-9 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, and have won four in a row.

In game one the 'Roos got a dominant pitching performance from Josh Lewis, and a four run third inning blew things open. Gus Daniel got the scoring started with an RBI single, and Chance Hatchel brought home two more runs. Thomas Oberg's RBI double completed the big inning and the 'Roos would never look back.

Schreiner would get a run in the top of the fourth, but Austin College plated three more in the fifth, with Oberg, Oscar Gonzalez, and Austin Dudley each picking up an RBI to make it 7-1. Oberg got his third RBI of the game in the sixth, and a single from Josh Boring in the eight made it a 9-1 final.

Lewis allowed one run on just two hits in 7.1 innings of work, striking out eight batters to earn his fourth win of the year. Austin College collected 17 hits as a team, with Oberg going 3-for-4 and Hatchel finishing 3-for-5. Daniel added a 2-for-4 performance with three runs scored.

Schreiner jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in game two before Scott Gelbart brought home a run to square things up, and Hatchel tripled to left to plate Gelbart and make it 2-1 after the opening frame. Schreiner's Josh Gilliam quickly tied it back up with a leadoff homer in the second, and the Mountaineers would take a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth.

Brett Taff brought home a run with an RBI single in the fifth, but the 'Roos would give the run back via a defensive miscue in the seventh as Schreiner went ahead 5-3. The lead would grow to 7-3 in the top of the eight before Justin Alphonse plated a run with a sacrifice fly to bring the 'Roos back to within three runs.

Austin Dudley got the scoring started in the bottom of the ninth for the 'Roos, and Taff's RBI single scored Oscar Gonzalez to make it a 7-6 game. With two outs and the bases full, Alphonse roped a single down the line in left field, bringing Dudley and Taff around and giving the 'Roos the victory.

Taff went 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and also earned the victory in relief, surrendering two runs on three hits with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings of work. The 'Roos had 15 hits as a team, with Dudley, Gelbart, Hatchel, and Gonzalez each collecting a pair.

The series sweep keeps Austin College's postseason hopes alive as they head into next week's regular season-ending series on the road at third place Trinity. The 'Roos are currently half a game behind Southwestern for the fourth and final SCAC Tournament spot.
