Southwestern Takes Friday Doubleheader Against 'Roos

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team fell in both halves of its Friday doubleheader at Southwestern, falling 16-2 in game one and 11-6 in game two. The 'Roos drop to 8-21 overall and 3-9 in conference play with the losses.

In game one, Southwestern plated nine runs in the fifth inning to blow things open, after the two teams had entered the frame with the score 4-1. The Pirates added three runs in the sixth to seal the game. Austin College scored its first run in the third on a Scott Gelbart RBI single, and picked up its second run in the sixth, when Cody Goggins brought home a run on a fielder's choice.

Christian Thomas took the loss, surrendering nine runs (three earned) on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. The 'Roos committed four errors in the game, leading to 10 unearned runs in the game. Gelbart went 3-for-3 to pace the 'Roos offensively.

In game two, Southwestern jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings before Austin College scored twice in the fourth to cut it to a 5-3 game, and three more in the fifth to briefly take a 6-5 lead. Chance Hatchel picked up an RBI in both innings, and Josh Boring drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring home the final run of the game for the 'Roos and give them the one run edge.

However, Southwestern quickly tied things up in the bottom half of the inning, and put five runs across in the bottom of the eighth to hand the 'Roos the loss. Brett Taff took the loss in relief, surrendering five runs on five hits in an inning of work. Taff also went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Hatchel and Austin Dudley each collected a pair of hits.
