SEGUIN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team split its doubleheader on Saturday against No. 23-ranked Texas Lutheran, taking game one 16-14 before falling 9-4 in game two. The 'Roos are now 8-19 overall and 3-6 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Scott Gelbart had a monster game at the plate in game one, homering twice and adding a double while driving in seven runs to lead the offensive charge. Gelbart got the scoring started in the top of the first with a grand slam, and after TLU plated three runs in the second, Gelbart answered with a two run shot to make it a 6-3 game.
Texas Lutheran squared things at 6-6 in the bottom half of the inning, but a Brett Taff two run homer highlighted a four run frame in the fourth to make it 10-6. Once again, however, the Bulldogs would answer back in the bottom of the fourth to even things up with four runs of their own. Five more runs came across in the sixth for Austin College, with Chance Hatchel and Austin Dudley each driving in a pair to make it 15-10.
TLU got three runs back in the bottom of the sixth and added another in the seventh to cut it to a 15-14 game, but Gelbart's RBI double in the top of the ninth sealed the victory. Gelbart finished 3-for-5, and Hatchel was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Tanner Logsdon earned the win in relief, while Taff picked up his second save of the season.
In game two, a sacrifice fly from Oscar Gonzalez in the second put Austin College ahead 1-0, and Josh Boring's RBI single in the fourth made it 2-0. The lead grew to 3-0 on a sacrifice fly by Thomas Oberg in the fifth, but Texas Lutheran got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth and exploded for six runs in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead. The margin grew to 9-3 in the seventh, and despite a run in the eighth the 'Roos were unable to mount a comeback in the 9-4 loss.
Josh Lewis took the loss for Austin College, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of work. Dudley went 3-for-5 to pace the 'Roos at the plate, while Boring and Gus Daniel each collected a pair of hits.
