'Roo Baseball Takes One of Three at Schreiner

The Austin College baseball team picked up one win during its three game series at Schreiner University over the weekend, bringing the team's record to 13-22 overall on the year. The 'Roos are also 2-13 in SCAC play as they head into their final series of the season, a home stand against Trinity next weekend.

The 'Roos took game one by a score of 10-1, grabbing a 1-0 lead when Austin Dudley scored on a wild pitch in the second and adding three runs in the seventh on a two run single by Scott Gelbart and an RBI base knock from Gus Daniel to make it 4-0. Schreiner plated one run in the bottom half of the inning, but in the top of the ninth the 'Roos exploded for six runs to make it a 10-1 final.

Christian Thomas belted a two run double in the inning to highlight the big offensive frame, and Oscar Gonzalez added an RBI double as well. Josh Lewis picked up the victory, going 7.0 innings and allowing one run on four hits. Daniel went 3-for-5 to pace the 'Roos on offense.

In the second game of the weekend, the 'Roos fell behind 3-0 after the third and 6-0 after five innings and were never able to recover, falling 7-3 in the game. The 'Roos plated a pair of runs in the sixth but Schreiner added one more in the bottom half of that inning to make it 7-2. Austin College got an RBI single from James Arguello in the seventh to make it a four run deficit but that's how thing would end.

Brett Moody took the loss, surrendering seven runs - only four earned - on nine hits in 6.0 innings of work. Arguello, Gonzalez, and Gelbart each had a pair of hits in the loss.

The 'Roos dropped a heartbreaker in walk-off fashion in the series finale on Saturday, falling 12-11 in 10 innings after scoring four runs in the ninth to force the extra frame. The 'Roos plated two runs in the first and took a 5-3 lead into the fourth inning, but Schreiner scored two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to go ahead 8-5.

Austin College cut it to an 8-7 game in the eighth on a Gonzalez RBI double and another run scoring single by Arguello, but three runs came home in the bottom half of the inning for Schreiner to make it an 11-7 game. However, in the top of the ninth the 'Roos got an RBI single from Jeremy Halford to kick things off, and Gonzalez smacked a two-run double. Arguello followed with an RBI double to square things at 11 and force extra innings.

Unfortunately for the 'Roos, Schreiner would take advantage of an error in the 10th and score an unearned run in the bottom half of the first extra frame to hand the 'Roos the 12-11 loss.

Gonzalez took the loss in relief, surrendering an unearned run on one hit in 1.0 innings of work. The freshman also went 2-for-5 with three RBI at the plate, while Thomas Oberg went 3-for-6 with two RBI and a double.
