'Roo Baseball Drops Two to Southwestern

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team led in both halves of its doubleheader against Southwestern University, but the Pirates came from behind each time to hand the 'Roos a 9-6 game one loss and a 10-6 game two loss. The 'Roos fall to 10-17 overall and 1-11 in SCAC play with the two defeats.

In the first game, Southwestern jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third before the 'Roos exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 5-3. Gus Daniel and Scott Gelbart got things started by driving in a run apiece, and Thomas Oberg drew a bases loaded walk to make it 3-3. Austin Dudley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and RJ Melton drew another bases loaded walk to put the 'Roos ahead by two runs.

Will Cates homered for Southwestern in the top of the fifth to cut it to a 5-4 game, but the 'Roos got the run back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Jeremy Halford to make it 6-4. That's the last run Austin College would score however, as Southwestern would plate three runs in the sixth to go on top 7-6, and two more runs would cross in the eighth to make it a 9-6 game.

Brett Moody took the loss for the 'Roos, surrendering seven runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Oscar Gonzalez went 3-for-5 and James Arguello and Oberg each had a pair of hits to pace Austin College offensively.

In game two, the 'Roos struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second as Derek Hester drove in a run and Gonzalez drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0, and another pair of runs came across in the fourth with Melton scoring on an error and Arguello singling home another run to make it a 4-0 game. Southwestern would get one run back in the fifth on a solo homer from Tyler Bludau to cut it to a 4-1 game.

The 'Roos tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Halford to make it 5-1, but Cates belted a homer to lead off the sixth and make it a 5-2 game. Two more runs came home for Southwestern in the seventh as the Pirates trimmed it to a one run game, but a balk brought an Austin College run home to make it a 6-4 lead after seven innings.

However, Southwestern would plate three runs in the eighth to go on top 7-6, and another three in the ninth to make it a 10-6 final. Trevor Anderson took the loss in relief, surrendering three runs on one hit and two walks without recording an out. Arguello, Melton, and Oberg each recorded two hits for Austin College.
