'Roos Unable to Hold Off Late Surge from TLU

SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team took an 11-3 lead into the seventh inning, but Texas Lutheran scored 11 unanswered runs to end the game and hand the 'Roos a 14-11 loss on Sunday afternoon at Baker Field. The 'Roos fall to 9-11 overall and 0-6 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the defeat.

The 'Roos got off to a fast start with three runs crossing in the bottom of the first, as Thomas Oberg singled home a run to get things started and Scott Gelbart plated another run. Gus Daniel doubled to deep center to put the third run across and send the 'Roos into the second inning with the 3-0 lead.

Texas Lutheran scored one run in the third and another in the fourth to trim it to a 3-2 game, but Tyler Tarbox, Austin Dudley and James Arguello each knocked in a run, followed by a run scoring double from Oberg and an RBI single from Gelbart in the bottom of the fourth to make it an 8-2 Austin College lead. Texas Lutheran would get one run back in the fifth to make it a five run game.

The 'Roos would plate three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, with Oscar Gonzalez dropping a single down the right field line to score Jeremy Halford, and Dudley and Gonzalez would score on a two-run base hit by Arguello as Austin College pushed the margin to 11-3 after five complete innings.

However, in the top of the seventh Trenton Ray led off with a solo homer and Keaton Borhmann added a three-run homer later in the inning as part of a seven run explosion for the Bulldogs as they fought back to make it an 11-10 game. Rayce Gatlin scored on a balk in the eighth inning to square things up.

In the top of the ninth, Eric Rabinowitz doubled to deep left center to bring home two runs, and Gatlin singled to bring home Rabinowitz to put TLU ahead 14-11 and that's how things would end.

Arguello went 4-for-6 with three RBI and Gonzalez, Oberg, and Tarbox each had three hits in the loss. Brett Moody took the loss after surrendering four runs in 2.1 innings in relief. For TLU, Drew Waller earned the win after striking out six batters and allowing just one hit in 3.0 innings in relief, and Derek Cantu earned the save, while Gatlin went 3-for-3 and Ray went 2-for-2 to pace the Bulldogs.
