'Roo Baseball Sweeps Double Dip with Pirates

The Austin College baseball team took both halves of its doubleheader against Southwestern University in Georgetown on Saturday, topping the Pirates by scores of 5-2 and 9-6. The 'Roos are now 5-14 overall and 3-6 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The 'Roos fell behind 1-0 after two innings in game one before tying things up on an Austin Dudley RBI single in the fifth, and the 'Roos took a 2-1 lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Thomas Oberg. The lead grew to 5-1 in the eighth when Dudley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Oberg brought home two more runs on a single down the left field line. Southwestern added one more run in the ninth but the 'Roos closed the door for the win.

Mychael Parish picked up the win, surrendering one run on six hits in 7.0 innings of work, and Josh Lewis tossed 2.0 innings to earn the save. Oberg finished 2-for-5 with three RBI while Dudley and Will Schommer also collected two hits.

The 'Roos jumped on top 1-0 on an RBI single by Todd Takabuki in the first, but Southwestern answered back to square things at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning. Southwestern took a 2-1 lead in the third, but Austin College pulled even with an RBI single from Josh Coughennower in the seventh.

The score remained 2-2 heading into the ninth, when the 'Roos erupted for seven runs in the top half of the inning. Jeremy Halford brought home the first run, and Gus Daniel smacked a grand slam to break the game open. Chance Hatchel added an RBI single, and Halford came up again and got his second RBI of the inning on a fielder's choice.

Southwestern came back with four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Austin College was able to hold off the rally for the 9-6 victory.

Marshall Korn earned the win in relief, and Daniel finished 2-for-4 with four RBI. Takabuki finished 3-for-5, and Hatchel went 2-for-4.
