'Roo Baseball Splits with Arlington Baptist

SHERMAN, Texas – Todd Takabuki delivered a walk-off double in a 6-5 win in game one against Arlington Baptist, but the Patriots plated two in the ninth to hand the 'Roos a 6-4 loss in game two of their doubleheader on Saturday. The 'Roos are now 2-1 after their weekend series against ABC to open the year.

Game one was scoreless until the third inning, when Jeremy Halford scored on an error to put Austin College ahead 1-0. The Patriots struck back with two runs in the top of the fourth, but in the bottom of the fifth the 'Roos regained the lead on a two run base knock by Gus Daniel to make it 3-2. Arlington Baptist would plate three runs in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead before Austin College mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh.

Dylan Day's two run single scored Thomas Oberg and Derek Hester to square things up, and Day came around on a long double to the gap in left center by Takabuki to give the 'Roos the walk-off victory. Halford and Takabuki each had two hits in the game, and Daniel and Day each went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Marshall Korn picked up the win in relief after working 0.1 innings in the top of the seventh.

Gus Daniel's RBI double in the bottom of the first gave Austin College a 1-0 lead to open up game two, and Halford scored on an error in the third to make it a 2-0 game. Two errors by the 'Roos opened the door for a four run inning for the Patriots in the fourth, but Will Schommer knocked in a run in the sixth to cut it to a 4-3 game, and James Arguello's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth squared things up heading into the final inning.

However, Kody Weil roped an RBI double to put the Patriots ahead, and then scored on a single to left by Tyler Brown and Austin College was unable to duplicate their final inning heroics from the first game.

Takabuki and Schommer each went 3-for-4 in the loss, and Arguello went 2-for-4. Korn took the loss after surrendering two runs, one earned, in 1.0 innings of relief work. Brett Moody tossed 8.0 innings to get the no decision, striking out seven while giving up four runs but only one earned.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
