The Austin College baseball team found itself tied 2-2 with Southwestern heading into the sixth inning, but the Pirates would score six runs over the next two innings to blow the game open on their way to handing the 'Roos an 11-6 loss on Friday night. The 'Roos are now 4-22 overall and 2-11 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Southwestern jumped on top 2-0 in the top of the first but Austin College answered back with a run in the bottom half of the inning, as James Arguello singled through the right side to score Hunter Wilson. Another Arguello single in the third scored Dylan Day and squared things at 2-2, and that's how things would stay until the top of the sixth, when Will Cates hit a solo homer to put Southwestern back on top 3-2.
It was in the seventh that the Pirates pulled away, taking advantage of a pair of errors to plate five runs in the inning and make it an 8-2 game. The lead grew to 11-2 in the top of the ninth when three more runs came home before Austin College rallied for four runs in the bottom half of the inning, but their comeback bid would fall short.
Braley Williams had an RBI single in the inning, and Marcos Molina doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and plate three more runs to make it an 11-6 final.
Blaine Tew absorbed the loss, surrendering seven runs, five earned, on nine hits in 6.0 innings of work. Arguello finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, as he collected three of the team's five hits on the day. Austin College and Southwestern will close out the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Baker Field.
