Offense Comes Alive for 'Roo Baseball in Sweep of Schreiner

The Austin College baseball team's bats came to life on Saturday as the 'Roos swept Schreiner by scores of 7-5 and 14-3, giving Austin College a series win over the Mountaineers this weekend. The 'Roos are now 4-17 overall and 2-7 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

In game one, the 'Roos found themselves trailing 5-0 heading into the sixth before staging a big comeback with a five run inning to square things up, and the 'Roos would plate two more in the top of the seventh to take a 7-5 victory. Gus Daniel, Todd Takabuki, and Patrick Renz got things started with an RBI apiece in the sixth, and Jacob Miller's two run base it knotted the score.

In the seventh, Marcos Molina scored what would prove to be the game winner when he came home on an error, and Takabuki added another RBI single to make it a 7-5 score. Molina finished 3-for-3 to lead the offense and Thomas Oberg picked up the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.

The 'Roos jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game two, with Hunter Wilson and Daniel each scoring on errors, and after taking a 2-0 lead into the fourth, the 'Roos exploded for nine runs in that inning. Schreiner committed four errors in the fourth to open the door for that big inning, and Josh Coughennower, James Arguello, Molina, and Dylan day each had an RBI and Brooks Ward drove in a pair as the 'Roos took an 11-0 lead.

Schreiner would put two runs on the board in the fifth, but Wilson, Takabuki, and Daniel each drove in another run to make it 14-2. The Mountaineers would tack on a run in the seventh but it wouldn't be enough to prevent the 'Roos from ending the game via the run-rule.

Josh Lewis picked up his first collegiate win in game two, tossing 7.0 innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on nine hits. Molina went 3-for-4 and Day finished 3-for-5, while Daniel and Jeremy Halford each went 2-for-5 in the game.
