Austin College Baseball Drops Pair to Trinity

The Austin College baseball team fell in both halves of its doubleheader against No. 3-ranked Trinity University on Sunday, falling 3-2 in extra innings in game one before dropping a 9-3 decision in game two. The 'Roos are now 2-12 overall and 0-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the two defeats.

In game one, the 'Roos and Tigers engaged in a pitcher's duel between Austin College's Blaine Tew and Trinity's Zack Speer. The 'Roos grabbed a 1-0 lead after the first when Gus Daniel drove in Dylan Day, but Trinity took a 2-1 lead in the third. Austin College battled back to square things up on a Will Schommer RBI single in the fourth and that would be how things would remain as the teams went to extra frames.

After neither team was able to put a run across in the eighth, Trinity loaded the bases and got an RBI single from Austin Singer to go up 3-2, but the 'Roos would work out of the jam to keep it a one run game. However, Austin College was unable to equalize in the bottom half of the inning.

Tew took the loss after surrendering three runs on seven hits in 8.1 innings of work, and six different 'Roos had a hit in the game. Speer got a no decision after allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits in 6.2 innings of work and Teddy Turner got the win in relief.

In game two, the Tigers came alive offensively early, plating eight runs in the first three innings to take an 8-1 lead. Two runs crossed in the first and two more scored in the second before Todd Takabuki scored on an error in the bottom half of that inning to make it 4-1, but four Trinity runs pushed it to a seven run margin after three.

Austin College got two runs back in the fifth on a two run single up the middle by Jared Jenkins, but the Tigers would add one more run in the sixth to make it a 9-3 final.

Jenkins was 1-for-2 with two RBI and once again six different 'Roos had one hit apiece in the loss, with Josh Lewis taking the loss on the mound after surrendering eight runs in 2.2 innings of work. Kyle Bogese earned the win for Trinity, allowing three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
