A five run fifth inning for No. 3-ranked Trinity University opened up what had been a pitcher's duel, and the Tigers would go on to hand the Austin College baseball team a 9-1 loss on Saturday afternoon. The 'Roos are now 2-10 overall this season and 0-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Trinity struck first in the top of the second with a solo homer by Nick Jewett, and the lead grew to 2-0 on a wild pitch in the fourth. That remained the score until the sixth, when the Tigers were able to score five to push the margin to 7-0. Two of the runs in the sixth were unearned.
The Tigers were able to plate another run in the eighth to make it 8-0 before the 'Roos were finally able to get on the board, getting their first two hits of the game in the bottom of the eighth with a double from Hunter Wilson scoring Patrick Renz to make it 8-1. Another run would come home for Trinity in the ninth to make it a 9-1 final.
Dylan Day and Wilson had the only two hits for Austin College, while Marshall Korn took the loss after surrendering seven runs, five earned, on nine hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Trinity's Ryan Gray took a no-hitter into the eighth before finishing with 14 strikeouts and two hits with one run in 8.0 innings to earn the victory for the Tigers.
Austin College will be looking to bounce back tomorrow when they take on Trinity for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
