Trinity University scored once in the first and once in the ninth and those would turn out to be the only runs of the game as the Tigers topped the Austin College baseball team 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Baker Field. The 'Roos fall to 10-24 overall and 7-10 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with the loss.
Trinity put its first three batters on base to open the first and Will Donnan drew a bases loaded walk to plate the first run, but Blaine Tew battled his way out of the no outs, bases loaded jam to get the 'Roos out of the inning trailing by just a run. The 'Roos got their best chance to equalize in the third when they loaded the bases, but Trinity pitcher Zach Speer managed to work his way out of the inning to keep it a 1-0 game.
That is how the score would stand until the top of the ninth when Chris Bianchi led off the inning with a double for Trinity, and after coming on to pinch run, Kelly Woodruff would score the insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Christian Muscarello to put the Tigers up 2-0. Austin College put two runners on when Colt Herron and Josh Coughennower drew walks but the 'Roos would be unable to get either across the plate in their final at bat.
Tew takes the loss after surrendering one run on just three hits in 5.0 innings of work while allowing five walks. Six different 'Roos got one hit, with Herron, Will Schommer, and Travis Gibson each going 1-for-3 in the game while Dylan Day, Tyler Appelquist, and Mason Leech each went 1-for-4.
Bianchi went 2-for-3 to lead the Tigers while Speer threw 8.1 innings of shutout ball to earn the win and Troy Ward retired the final two batters to earn the save for Trinity.
