Men’s soccer completes weekend sweep

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Christian Lopez had a banner night, scoring two of the three Pirate goals to lead SU to a 3-0 victory over Austin College to complete the SCAC weekend sweep.

It was just 13 minutes into the game when Southwestern made their first big move. Andres Carreno-Mendez began the sequence of events, finding David Arellano who centered the ball to Lopez. Lopez, who was just five yards from goal, made the quick touch to put the ball in the back of the net and give the Pirates a 1-0 lead early.

Lopez added his second goal, this time unassisted, at the 31st minute, sending SU into the break with a 2-0 lead.

Southwestern played with ample confidence in the second half and extended their lead further as Ryan Jones scored an unassisted goal in the 76th minute. The Pirate defense remained tough all night and buckled down to help SU secure the 3-0 win.

The Pirates led 20-8 in shots and 7-1 in corner kicks while Travis Carmichael secured three saves in goal.

Now 2-5 on the year and 2-1-0 in the SCAC, the Pirates return home and remain in SCAC play as they face Texas Lutheran University on Friday at 6 p.m.
