Huge second half gives women’s basketball easy win over ‘Roos

SHERMAN, Texas – Southwestern shot nearly 50% from the floor and posted 43 second half points while allowing only 23 in the first half to take a 78-56 win over Austin College on Friday.

Austin College started on a 6-0 run, but the Pirates led by 12 at halftime, 35-23, getting nine point from Cara Sheffer who couldn't miss. Sheffer was a perfect 3-3 from the field, 1-1 from three point range and 2-2 from the free throw line the opening frame.

Jordan Owens scored eight straight points and started a run that allowed the Pirates to post their largest lead of the game, 23 points, with 12:02 left to play.

Southwestern cruised the rest of the way as they closed out the 78-56 win. SU shot just under 50% from the floor and 38.1% from three point line, being led by Owens' 14 points. Sheffer ended with 11 points as did Chelsea Leeder.

The Pirates were all over the boards, pulling down 46 of the 79 rebounds and was led by Annie Bourne who had 13.

Leeder's 11 points moves her within 21 points of breaking into the top ten in scoring in the SCAC.

The Pirates improve to 11-10 on the year and 7-3 in the SCAC after the win while AC falls to 10-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play. SU heads to Shreveport on Saturday for their next game against Centenary College.
