Hot Start Propels First-Place ’Roos Past CC

Playing at Hughey Gym for the last time, senior forward Bryce Frank posted game highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead first-place Austin College to an 81-52 victory over Colorado College in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Friday night.

Frank scored 10 points during the first quarter as the 'Roos took a 26-14 lead, but CC was within nine points when first-year forward Katie Beth Jones scored on a layup with 8:20 remaining in the second quarter to make the score 28-19 with 8:20 remaining in the second quarter.

Austin closed out the first half with a 15-4 surge to build a 20-point lead after 20 minutes, and after sophomore winger McKenzee Gertz scored for the Tigers to open the second half, Austin scored the next eight points to end any hopes of a Colorado College comeback.

Jones came off the bench to match her season high of 10 points and grab a season-best four rebounds.

Sophomore guard Jade Odom added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Gertz added 10 points for the Tigers, who slipped to 10-13 overall and 7-8 in the SCAC.

In the battle for fifth place in the conference standings, Colorado College holds a one-win edge over Centenary College and a two-win lead over Schreiner University.

The 'Roos shot nearly 70 percent from the floor during the first half and finished the game at 54 percent.

Austin posted a 40-33 advantage on the boards and outscored CC 58-14 in the paint.

Reagan Chiaverini added 13 points for the 'Roos, who improved to 19-4 overall and 12-2 in the SCAC.

Colorado College visits Johnson & Wales University next Saturday in the regular-season finale at 1 p.m.
