Harris Leads CC to Sweeps of Austin, Dallas

Haley Harris posted a blistering .531 hitting percentage to lead the second-ranked Colorado College volleyball team to a pair of sweeps at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference crossover matches at Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon.

CC improved to 13-0 overall and 3-0 in the SCAC.

Harris hit .625 with a match-high 17 kills as the Tigers began the day with a 25-15, 25-14, 25-20 victory over Austin College. The junior outside hitter also recorded a match-high 14 digs to complete her sixth double-double (kills-digs) of the season.

Senior middle hitter Myca Steffey-Bean also was a force on the offensive side of the net, pounding down 10 kills on 16 attempts with just two errors, which was good for a .500 hitting percentage.

Junior middle hitter Marguerite Spaethling also hit .500, smashing 11 kills on 20 swings with only one error.  

CC finished with a .424 team hitting percentage, surpassing the .400 mark for the third time in its last four matches.

/Brooke Harris and Christine Royalty had six kills apiece to lead the 'Roos.

Despite having only one brief lead in the second set, Austin finished with a .117 team hitting percentage and became just the second opponent to hit better than .100 against the Tigers this season.

Colorado College rode a dominating defensive effort to a 25-14, 25-18, 25-7 win over the University of Dallas in the final match of the day.

Spaethling led CC with a personal season-best seven block assists, while junior setter Lizzy Counts tied her season high with five.

The Crusaders hit just -.037 and became the third opponent to finish with a negative hitting percentage in a match against the Tigers this season.

Harris paced the Colorado College attack with 14 kills, while junior defensive specialist Caitlin Laurence and Spaethling each served up three of the team's nine aces.

A kill by Savannah Walker gave the Crusaders a 15-13 lead in the second set, but Laurence served eight consecutive points to put CC back in control and the momentum carried through a dominating third set.

Laurence and junior libero Anna Gurolnick led the Tigers with nine digs apiece.

Dayjah Whyte led UD with five kills, while Sarah Hughes and Krystyn Pua each recorded eight digs.

Colorado College faces Centenary College and host Southwestern University on Sunday at 10 a.m. CT and 2 p.m. CT, respectively.
