Softball rebounds with two huge wins

After a pair of losses on Friday, Southwestern softball posted two big wins over Austin College on Saturday. The Pirates won 7-0 and 13-3 (6) in Sherman.

Game one seemed to be taking the same track as yesterday's contests and the games were scoreless through three innings. Then, Southwestern unleashed a flurry of hits and posted six runs on four hits in the fourth to take a commanding lead. Berkeley Bacon got things rolling in the inning with a leadoff homerun.

SU added one more in the sixth on a single by Marissa Irvin to bring home Taylor Curtis and the Pirates were never really threatened the rest of the way as they cruised to the 7-0 win.

Caroline Young led at the plate going 3-3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Sydney Oorlog and Jordan Kunz both logged two hits each. Cozette Palmer earned the complete game shutout, scattering four hits while walking two and striking out 11.

Southwestern was rolling and took that momentum into game two, scoring seven runs in the first three innings. Austin College took advantage of a letup defensively by the Pirates to posted three runs in the second, but SU unloaded for six in the sixth and shut down the 'Roos in the bottom half of the inning to secure the 13-3 run rule victory.

Berkeley Bacon, Michele Ramos and Irvin all recorded three hits in the win. Alyssa Novander earned the complete game win, allowing three runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out two.

Southwestern improves to 16-14 on the year and 12-4 in the SCAC with the wins. Austin College falls to 10-12 overall and 5-11 in conference play. The Pirates remain on the road to face SCAC top-ranked Texas Lutheran for a four game series in Seguin beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.
