AC Athletics Update, 9/26/2018

It was a wet weekend all over Texas, but a winning weekend for #RooNationFootball got its first win of the season, Women’s Tennis had success at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships they haven’t had in since 2011, and Volleyball got a win over new SCAC affiliate Johnson & Wales.

With Soccer having been rained out this past weekend, the ‘Roos will be hungry for a victory at home this weekend against Trinity and Schreiner.  So without wasting anymore time, let’s dive into the weekend recaps and preview the next few days in a fresh installment of the AC Athletics Update!

Women’s Volleyball

After dropping two games on the road in Georgetown on Saturday, the Kangaroo Volleyball Team picked up a 3-0 sweep of Johnson & Wales.

Last night, in non-SCAC competition, AC hosted Ouachita Baptist and Howard Payne, splitting the results of the two matches and defeating the Yellow jackets 3-1 in Hughey Gym.

The ‘Roos will be on the road this Thursday at Arlington Baptist before traveling to Abilene, TX to face Hardin-Simmons and McMurry on Saturday.  Good luck, AC.

A rematch from two weeks ago takes place at the Dr. Jack Pierce Memorial Soccer Complex, as Trinity University invades Sherman this Friday in one of the only home contests on campus this weekend.  Make sure you come out in full force to support our Kangaroos against the Tigers, and come back on Sunday to support them over the Schreiner Mountaineers at 12:00PM

Authors and academics alike use rain as a symbol of rebirth in literature.  We could not have been more proud or excited to see our Kangaroos get a rainy win over the Hendrix Warriors at home, on Mel Tjeerdsma Day, in front of #RooNation.  And thank you all for coming out and braving the conditions with us to show your support for our Football Team and Mel Tjeerdsma.

With a road game in Rome, GA against Berry College on the schedule, we keep our thoughts with the ‘Roos and cheer them on against the Vikings this weekend.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00PM, and audio, video, and live stats are available on the ACRoos.com website.

Men’s & Women’s Cross-Country

Participating in the OLLU Invitational in San Antonio, TX, the Kangaroo Runners placed 6th out of 12 teams, 3rd amongst DIII opponents, on the Men’s SideRaymond Navarro finished 20th overall, with 5 athletes finishing within the Top-50.

On the Women’s Side, Hannah Richards finished 28th overall with a time of 21:52.4 to lead the way for the ‘Roos.

AC is off from competition this weekend, traveling to the Tiger Invitational next Saturday, October 6th, 2018 in Marshall, TX.

Women’s Tennis

A long and hard-fought weekend resulted in an historic finish to the fall for Women’s Tennis.  The ITA Southwest Regional Championships hosted by Trinity University produced a personal best for Melody Duong, as she won her way into the semi-finals of the tournament, and advanced two rounds further than her tournament last year.  She lost to the eventual champion from ETBU, earning her third-place overall.

AC had one of the toughest strength of schedules across the entire tournament, with an opponent win/loss percentage of 62.34%, opponent championships in A-Singles, B-Singles, and B-Consolation Singles, and opponent runner-up performances in A-Consolation Singles, B-Singles, and C-Singles.

With the conclusion of this weekend, Austin College turns its eyes to the spring, as the dual-match season will hopefully produce an improvement on last year’s 13-8 record, 3rd-place finish in the SCAC tournament, and an opportunity to participate in NCAA’s.

Men’s & Women’s Soccer at home on Friday and Sunday, with everyone else on the road.  So make your way down to the Dr. Jack Pierce Memorial Soccer Complex for two big SCAC showdowns that hold “playoff” implications this late in the season.

And if you are interested in keeping tabs on our road-warriors and showing your support for them, please take a minute to follow their social media accounts for all updates, images, and results.
