AC Athletics Update, 2/27/2019

Weather continues to be a factor for a lot of our Spring Sports Teams this year.  But we know whenever they get the opportunity to showcase all of their hard work, they will do us proud in competition.

We have reached our conclusion of all Winter Sports Seasons, and have the home openers for both Baseball and Men’s & Women’s Tennis on the schedule, so without delaying further, this is the final February installment of the AC Athletics Update.

Baseball

Congratulations to our Kangaroo Men’s Baseball Team for getting a win in their home opener last night over Dallas Christian.  Our ‘Roos have been struggling with all the weather cancelling 12 games in the month of February, but we were glad to see you in action last night.

Come out to Baker Field this Friday as we hope the Month of March will provide us with better weather to play a home double-header against Arlington Baptist at 5:00PM & 7:30PM

  • Friday, March 1st, 2019
    • Home vs. Arlington Baptist @ 5:00PM & 7:30PM

Distance Track

More records fall in Distance Track’s first meet of the season, as 30 mile-per-hour winds were not able to deter our Student-Athletes from having successful season-opening performances.

RJ Navarro and Andrew Thomas both went under the Austin College record in the 5,000-meter race, and Danielle Lozano finished fifth overall in the 5,000-meter race as well.

Several Kangaroos finished in the Top-15 in the 1500-meter races, and will look to improve on a stellar first meet when they travel to UT-Tyler on Saturday, March 2nd.

  • Saturday, March 2nd, 2019
    • Away vs. Texas-Tyler

Men’s & Women’s Tennis

In the inaugural SCAC/ASC/SAA Challenge, the Austin College Men’s Tennis Team earned a 9-0 victory over Centenary between a loss to LeTourneau University, and a thrilling 5-4 defeat at the hands of Millsaps.  Sophomore Andres Padilla went 2-0 against the Yellow Jackets and Majors, while him and sophomore partner Calum Robe went undefeated at Line 2 Doubles against those teams.

Women’s Tennis managed to grab two wins over the same opponents, with their only defeat coming to Millsaps College on Sunday evening.  Junior Diana Carvajalino went 2-0 at Line 1 and Line 3 Singles, while Senior co-Captain Kirsten Weber and her Junior partner Anna Sergiovanni won both of their Line 2 matches against LeTourneau and the Majors.  Sergiovanni went 3-0 in doubles on the weekend, defeating Centenary at Line 1 with Sophomore partner Chandler Morris.

AC hopes to be back on the courts this weekend, as East Texas Baptist, Hardin-Simmons, and Concordia (TX) will all square off with the Kangaroos at the Smith Tennis Center in Denison, TX.

Women’s Water Polo

The time has finally come for a Texas Division III Women’s Water Polo team to take the pool in competition for the first time.  That program belongs to none other than Austin College.

The Kangaroos are set to take on Macalester, host Wittenberg, Carthage, and Monmouth this weekend in Springfield, Ohio.  The start times will be listed below, but we want to express our excitement and congratulations in advance to Head Coach Mark Lawrence and the Kangaroos for making history in 2019 for AC.  Great job, ‘Roos, and good luck this season!

 Women’s Basketball

A valiant 4th-quarter comeback by the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs knocked our Kangaroos out of the SCAC Tournament in the Semi-Finals 72-68.

To the Student-Athletes and Head Coach Michelle Filander, we say thank you for all the great moments of your 20-6 (13-3 SCAC) season, and that we are immensely proud of each and every one of you for the way you represent us, both on and off the court.

Congratulations on a great year, and though we didn’t make it to the mountain top this year, the graduating seniors and alumni from year’s past will be proud to celebrate with us in the future.  Good luck this offseason, and thank you for everything this year.  Go ‘Roos.

Baseball plans to be home on Friday, March 1st, and Men’s & Women’s Tennis hosts three matches on Saturday and Sunday.  Meanwhile, history will be made in a pool on Wittenberg University’s campus on Saturday at 11:15 AM when our Women’s Water Polo Team plays their first competitive game.
