This Week in AC Athletics, 3/26 - 4/1

This Week in AC Athletics, 3/26 - 4/1

What a fantastic week is was for Austin College.  Hopefully all of you in #RooNation enjoyed the Presidential Inauguration festivities of this past weekend, and a heartfelt congratulations to President Steven O’Day, his wife Cece, and their family.

In Athletics, Men’s Tennis grabbed two more wins on the road, and Women’s Tennis snagged their first-ever victory over a nationally ranked program, #40 California Institute of Technology.

Distance Track shattered more records in Abilene and Arlington, and claimed a first place in the 10,000-meter event.

Let’s recap this week’s events, and preview the Baseball and Distance Track events on the road in our next installment of the AC Athletics Update!

Baseball

Austin College Baseball dropped three games at home this past weekend to #2 Trinity University.  The team is back on the road in conference competition against the University of Dallas this weekend on Friday, and Saturday.  Make sure you follow @ACSports for all updates and acsports.com for box scores, video, and live stats.

Distance Track

In their first competitive weekend since Spring Break, the Kangaroo Runners travelled to Abilene & Arlington and posted more strong showings.

Hannah Richards competed at the Bobby Lane Invitational at UT-Arlington and broke her own program record in the 1500-meters.

In Abilene, Eden Llamas placed 6th in the 5,000-meter run, Chris Biffar placed 5th for the Men in the same event, and Alex Quinn won the 10,000-meter with a time of 43:25.76.

Up next is the Oklahoma Baptist Track & Field Invitational with several ‘Roos competing in the 1,500-meter, 800-meter, and 5,000-meter events.  Follow @ACRoosXCTrack for more broken records, pictures, and results of how our Runners perform in competition.

Men’s Tennis

After playing 5 matches in 5 days against 3 nationally ranked teams, Austin College Men’s Tennis took to the court for 4 matches in 3 days across San Antonio, Belton, and Austin.

The relentless ‘Roos fell 9-0 to Trinity on Day 1, but took both matches in a double-header against Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia on Day 2.  Day 3 against Colby, the Kangaroos took Line 2 doubles with Erik Meendsen and Josh Granberry’s dominant performance.

Siddharth Kortikere and Andres Padilla stepped up to Line 1 and found themselves down 1-6.  But the Line 1 tandem made excellent adjustments and found themselves serving down 7-8.  Calum Robe dropped a close first set at Line 4 singles, but took the second set 7-5 and the super-tiebreaker for the third set to prevent the singles sweep against the Mules.

AC is off this weekend, but will be back for three SCAC matches against Schreiner, Centenary, and Texas Lutheran (Senior Day) on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday next week.

Women’s Tennis

Another banner weekend for Kangaroo Women’s Tennis Team as the Kangaroos upset the #40 Cal Tech Beavers in San Antonio for the program’s first win against a nationally ranked opponent.

AC went 3-2 on the weekend, dropping a closely contested 5-4 decision vs. Colby College from Maine in their 9th match in 12 days.

For their accomplishments, Grace Ortiz and Melody Duong earned SCAC Doubles Team of the Week and Anna Sergiovanni earned SCAC Singles Player of the Week.

With the latest ITA Rankings releasing today, Melody Duong and Diana Carvajalino are ranked #17 and #22 in the West Region Singles Rankings, the tandem of Grace Ortiz/Melody Duong is the #12 Doubles Team in the West Region, and the Women’s Tennis Team moved up from #15 to #11 in the West Region Team Rankings.

Austin College has no matches this weekend, but hosts Schreiner on Friday, and Texas Lutheran on Sunday (Senior Day). Take a break this weekend, and come out in full force for our Tennis Players next weekend as they gear up for the Conference Tournament.

Baseball and Distance Track are the only teams with competitions this week, and they are both on the road.

But next week, Tennis is the lone competitor on campus, and they will be hosting Senior Day on Sunday against Texas Lutheran.  So get your studying done in advance while you keep track of Baseball and Distance Track this Friday, and Saturday. Then make a plan to come out to the Russell Tennis Courts to celebrate Grace Ortiz, Daniel Oxenreiter, and Erik Meendsen in their final home matches of their collegiate careers on Sunday, 4/8 @ 9:00AM.
